Overhaul Varela

Madrid. España.

Built Area: 84m²

In this complete reform of a house in the center of Madrid our interest lies in putting into practice several concepts that we consider crucial when thinking about housing: space, versatility, flexibility, efficacy, warmth. And more when it comes to administering little usable surface.

Our position before the project is closely related to the concept of the Machine à habiter of Le Corbusier and the modern movement: housing understood as a functional machine. All the decisions are subject to this filter that is to think about how the house provides services and comforts, as it solves needs that the inhabitant has and to which we have the duty to respond.

The structure of the House allows a certain facility when distributing the spaces. It is a 20x5m prism in which to fit a 2 bedroom housing program. The volume is divided into two parts, one the most lived during the day and another that groups the bedrooms. This division is made with a folding door integrated into a partition that when confused with it emphasizes the division in the housing with a sense of humour. When the door is opened it fits into another perpendicular septum so that no space remains.

Given the proportions of the house, the long corridor that had the original distribution is integrated into the rooms so that it gains space and shortens the length of that corridor.

The storage is another strong point of the house: It made a thorough study to take advantage of all the recesses that has the dwelling, arriving to hurry for example the necessary height of the shower in order to get a trunk on top of it.
